How to Start Taking Responsibility and Realise Your Potentials

One of my strongest beliefs is that we are all made for greatness. Naturally, each and every one of us are made to utilise the resources around us and those within us and this natural makeup is power. Stanley stated clearly that with great power comes great responsibility. But most of us fails to use this power because we resist taking responsibility.

You are responsible

I learned to start thinking in this way five years ago after I left secondary school, I was no where. I needed to further my education or get a good source of income. My account balance was nothing to write home about. I was broke and the present conditions didn't seem promising like something which would yield a successful life.

Then I thought about it and I learnt something, I learnt that no one was coming to the rescue, no one really cares and even if they care, everyone needed you almost as you needed them.

You know that popular word people who go broke often hear, No. People tell them often. It rang through my ear every day. Then I realised that whatever I may become is upto me.

That I have the power to shape my destiny by my moment to moment decisions. That at every moment, I had a choice, and to every choice, there's a consequence. I dived into self help materials that could motivate and improve me. They were mostly from western philosophy and religious books to get an answer. I still found answers that helped me dive into the business world, and it took a great deal of independence which requires taking responsibility, making choices and effective plans.

Taking responsibility is the hallmark of the achiever. Knowing that you should alter the state of your life no matter how things change is the life that makes a difference. You are born to handle affairs. Here are ways to start taking Responsibility in order to realise your potential.

Things to stop doing?

The definition of genius is taking the complex and making it simple. Albert Einstein

Clarity is essential. Always make things as simple as possible. One of the best ways to gain clarity over every other things like work and relationships is to simplify your personal life.

  1. stay organised. Let every thing have there place, your documents, books and properties. Also practice unconditional cleanliness. Practice "keep as you go" system. Wash your dishes after use, keep your materials and tools at there right position after use.
  2. study and think. Successful people study and think, this help to build wisdom and could prevent poor decision making. Almost every field these days has good and helpful books that has been written to help those who it is there 'calling. You can enquire from a librarian on ones you can buy and study, while studying, think. And if you have good and like minded friends you can discuss what you have read to gain clarity.
  3. Make a calculated decision. Decision is the great power to influence reality and the future. After study, not necessarily from books but also from present reality which can be verified through reviews, asking questions and getting answers from trusted sources, then make a decision. Bill Gates the founder of Microsoft, will advise you not to make the same decision twice, he said, "spend time and thought to make a decision a solid decision the first time so that you don't revisit the issue unnecessarily, if you're too willing to reopen issues it interferes not only with your execution but also with your motivation to make a decision in the first place. After all, why bother deciding an issue if it really isn't decided."
  4. Use the "Zero-mind-base-approach(ZMBA). This approach, work in most difficult situations, it means approaching a matter from the view point of an outsider, as a person who is unaware of what has arisen. If you were this person how will you think and what steps will you take. There are occasions where you may misplace some files or important stuff, or in your work or personal life, things may get confusing and some problems may seem immovable, trying the zero-mind-base-approach (ZMBA) has been helpful for me.
  5. Keep your head clear. Apart from thoughts that may arise from the event at hand, trying to worry about the results of what you are working on become a problem on its own. Just try to focus on the moment, the game at hand, knowing that if you can't control the ball at hand, you can't control where its landing will be.

Condemnation and, Criticism.

These are other ways of being judgemental. You will always here, judge not that ye be not judged. Just try to see the good in every situation and people and this doesn't mean you should totally ignore leaking spots. But seeing the good in all people and circumstances help you enjoy all.

Those of us who can't take responsibility take it as an obligation to apportion judgement (this is a self-imposed, because people rarely ask you to be there criticising agent.) If you must judge, you must judge only for yourself.

If you are a leader, your followers may fail perhaps because they lack appropriate guidance and knowledge and at some point in life of growing unsuccessful youths, they may be compared to blame the government or their parents for their sense of lack and limitations but although while pointing those fingers we may be right when these people fail in their responsibilities but these will stop you from taking responsibility for your life. Always aim at improving and creating better ways to support your subjects and colleagues rather than seek ways to criticise, complain or condemn. Benjamin Franklin says, "Any fool can complain condemn and criticise and most fools do."

Complaining and excuse.

This is not a good criterion for success. It's an act of immaturity. It's what children do to avoid criticism from authority figures and also to dulge responsibility. Florence Nightingale often attribute the success to not giving or taking excuses.

One can go through life giving reasons why they don't succeed. Instead of talking about reasons why you have not succeeded, turn the phase of the wheel. Start looking for reasons why you can succeed and this will make a difference. Stop looking at those reasons your mind supply to defend yourself. There was a story about two marketers sent to Africa to make a survey on the available market for shoes, when they came to Africa, the first marketer concluded his survey and said, "No business opportunities, Africans don't wear shoes." while the second after concluding his survey? Said, there's business opportunities because Africans needs shoe.

So instead of seeing problems or holding on one as an excuse, see it as opportunity.

Remember: When people complain or you find yourself in complaining attitude, ask this complain-dissolving question, "What way forward?"

Things to start doing.

Competence mean being good at what you do. Many field these days are filled with lots of competent people and not all of us are creative enough to develop new lines for vocation. So if you are ready to go into any field or succeed in it you must be competent. These are few ways to develop competency in your field.

  1. aim to be best at it.
  2. Improve your skill continually.
  3. Have a competitive advantage. Develop strengths, it can be sales skills or customer service.
  4. Give more than it is required.
  5. commit to excellence.

Without confidence, we rarely succeed in any thing. You must first believe in your self. Well, I have studied success and successful people for more than eleven years and what I have come to learn is that successful people are people with several good qualities mixed together and one of the quality that is found in all successful of them is that they have confidence.

They have faith and believe in themselves.

Self confidence formula: Success builds confidence and you have to try, and most often fail over again before you succeed.

As You commit to succeed, maintain your health, health is essential to accumulate and enjoy wealth. See your body and mind as a gift or as Warren Buffett will say in this short description :

“ When I was sixteen, I had just two things on my mind - girls and cars. I wasn't very good with girls. So I thought about cars. I thought about girls, too, but I had more luck with cars. Let's say that when I turned sixteen, a genie had appeared to me. And that genie said, 'Warren, I'm going to give you the car of your choice. It'll be here tomorrow morning with a big bow tied on it. Brand- new. And it's all yours.' Having heard all the genie stories, I would say, 'What's the catch?' And the genie would answer, 'There's only one catch. This is the last car you're ever going to ge tin your life. So it's got to last a lifetime.' If that had happened, I would have picked out that car. But, can you imagine, knowing it had to last a lifetime, what I would do with it? I would read the manual about five times. I would always keep it garaged. If there was the least little dent or scratch, I'd have it fixed right away because I wouldn't want it rusting. I would baby that car, because it would have to last a lifetime. That's exactly the position you are in concerning your mind and body. You only get one mind and one body. And it's got to last a lifetime. Now, it's very easy to let them ride for many years. But if you don't take care of that mind and that body, they'll be a wreck forty years later, just life the car would be. It's what you do right now, today, that determines how your mind and body will operate ten, twenty, and thirty years from now."

I want to remind you something about life that consigns you, there's no limit so hard to overcome, no mountain so high to climb over by a man who believes in himself. I believe in you and I know you can realise your potentials by realising that your life is yours to build. But first, you must believe in yourself.
